Distribution: Indomalayan/Palearctic. Breeds in southern SIBERIA (Lake Baikal) and MONGOLIA east to Amur, northeastern CHINA (Manchuria), NORTH KOREA, and JAPAN (rarely) south to northern MYANMAR and northeastern INDIA (Assam); winters from PAKISTAN, INDIA and SRI LANKA to southern CHINA, BORNEO, and PHILIPPINES. more....

Habitat and Habits: In its breeding range, it is found in open dry steppe, river valleys, meadows, swamps, lake basins, coatal marshes, ricefields, and reed beds. Like other harrier species, it courses low over the ground, flying back and forth searching for prey. Perches on ground or grassy embankments (Kennedy et al. 2000). more....

Food and Feeding Behavior: Feeds on small rodents, frogs, small birds, and their nestlings (Flint 1984).
