R. Wayne Nelson

   Biography

Wayne became ‘hooked’ on raptors in his early teens upon reading the Craigheads’ articles in National Geographic Magazine, while growing up near Vernon in the Okanagan Valley of south-central British Columbia (B.C.), Canada. He became a falconer, then a birdwatcher and a naturalist. Shortly after ‘the Peregrine crisis’ was discovered, he proposed, and was accepted for, graduate studies emphasizing Peregrine behaviour, to be done on Falco peregrinus pealei on the Queen Charlotte Islands (now known as Haida Gwaii) of B.C. Two theses were completed on those subjects from The University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta; that knowledge was helpful in the struggling captive breeding efforts of the time. After a few consulting contracts, he worked for 25 years as a Wildlife, Habitat, Fisheries, and (again) Wildlife Biologist with the Alberta Fish and Wildlife Division, and during many of those years hunted with a Ferruginous Hawk, a Prairie Falcon, and Peregrines. In 2003, ‘on the job’ he began studies on the Turkey Vultures nesting in abandoned farm buildings in east-central Alberta; when he retired in 2006, he took that project into retirement with him. Also in his retirement, he is attempting to compile and analyze the data gleaned from annual visits through more than four decades to monitor the small population of Peregrines that he first studied in 1968.

In 2006 - retired from Alberta Fish & Wildlife Division, St. Paul, Alberta
