Muhammad Arshad

   Biography

Muhammad Arshad was born and raised in Arifwala, Pakistan. He graduated from Bahuddin Zakariya University in 1999 with a Master’s degree in Zoology and MPhil degree in ornithology in 2002. Between 2000 and 2004 he worked in the Asian Vulture Crisis Project, primarily focusing on the extensive declines of vultures (Gyps bengalensis) in Southern Asia, coordinating the collection of field data in Pakistan as a means of establishing the cause of vulture mortality. This research confirmed that veterinary use of the anti-inflammatory pharmaceutical diclofenac is responsible for the vulture decline across Southern Asia, a discovery that has enabled the adoption of credible strategies to offset the crisis. In 2005, he obtained a DAAD fellowship and successfully completed his PhD research on “Ecological and Genetic Studies of Gyps Species” from Heidelberg University, Germany. He currently lives in Heidelberg doing postdoc work at the University. His interests are swimming, badminton, singing, raptor watching, and friendship.
