Ian Newton

   Biography

Ian earned a Ph.D. at Oxford University under the tutelage of David Lack. He conducted post-doctoral research on finches in the 1964-67 and authored a well respected book on that group. During the 1970s, he conducted extensive research on several British raptor species, especially in regard to pesticide effects on their nesting populations. In 1979, he produced the classic book, Population ecology of raptors, and a comprehensive monograph on the Eurasian Sparrowhawk followed in 1986. From 1989-2000, he headed the Avian Biology Section at the Monks Wood Research Station and has continued his research on raptors since his "retirement" in 2000. He has authored five books, served as editor of six books, published 267 technical papers and 33 contract reports, made frequent TV and radio appearances, and is a popular presenter of keynote and plenary addresses at ornithological society meetings. He has served as President of THe British Ornithologists' Union and the British Ecological Society and is presently serving as the Chairman of the Council of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and Chairman of the Board of Directors of The Peregrine Fund. He has received numerous awards, including Order of the British Empire, the Union Medal of the British Ornithologists' Union, and the Elliot Coues Award of the American Ornithologists' Union.
